Topics I've Started

Hamilton

07 December 2016 - 10:30 PM

I wasn't sure which subforum this should go in, but I think settling here was the right decision.

So am I being hyperbolic, or this one of the best damn things I've ever seen/heard? I first listened to the soundtrack two Sundays ago, and I honestly haven't stopped. It feels like every aspect synthesizes perfectly. The original cast on the soundtrack is simply astounding. There's been a bootleg floating around on youtube of a whole performance which is amazing. Of course I haven't seen the show in person, since I'm neither New Yorkian nor rich. It is coming to Cleveland eventually, though, so I will try to get tickets when it goes on sale.

If you're unfamiliar with the context, here's the creator Lin-Manuel Miranda performing a work in progress version of the first song back in 2009. Oh yeah, and at the White House. You know, during the brief period when it didn't suck.

STAR WARS!

16 December 2015 - 12:35 PM

So...who is going to see Star Wars sometime? I'm going Friday morning, because the internet is simply not a safe enough space to last much longer. But since we don't have a new movie to talk about yet, there are still six other movies to talk about. Well, three movies and three "movies," but of course opinions vary. For example, for some reason my wife puts Empire last. Out of all six, because it's too depressing apparently. Oh well, nobody's perfect.

Has anybody else done any re-watching? This weekend a friend of mine watched episodes 3 to 6. Really, episode is not any better than 1 or 2. It is filled with scenes of people sitting around and talking about the plot without anything else relevant happening. There's an entire wookie battle going on as pure window dressing. The only relevance to any of our characters is "Yoda doesn't die here." That's it. The whole movies goes that way. There are "action scenes," but they're not important to anything at all. Ugh. Beyond the writing still being terrible, every aspect of its filmaking is just as broken as the previous movies.

PJ Harvey

19 January 2011 - 12:40 AM

Guys, there's a new PJ Harvey album out in less than a month, and I have not seen it mentioned once on this board. Our priorities are slipping! I've just listened to her perform Let England Shake, and  this is definitely a different Polly Jean than the one I first heard. I'm really pumped to hear the rest of this album.

Edit: and as more incentive to discuss PJ Harvey, one of my favorite musical performances ever.

Akron/Family

20 September 2009 - 10:12 PM

Has anybody else here heard of this band, Akron/Family? If I had to describe them, I'd say they're like a cross between new-wave college hippie and electronic rock, with a lot of strange sounds thrown in the mix. I saw them live in Cleveland for free a few months ago, and they were quite good. Their live show had a lot of jamming, but nothing like playing some mid-tempo groove for twenty minutes. It was more like pounding away at some ridiculously strong rhythm until you can't anymore, then they change tunes. They also had a strange downsizing from about 6 or 7 people down to a power trio. Both versions play great shit, though.

Here are some select songs:

Everyone is Guilty
The River (this one's really delicately beautiful, in my opinion)
Ed is a Portal
Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead

Biggest drop in Quality EVAR

Exhibit A: Santana - Soul Sacrifice (Woodstock)

Exhibit B:Santana feat. Chad Kroeger - ... Do we really care what the song's called?

I've actually been listening to a lot of early Santana, and goddamn that band could cook, and Carlos' playing fits right alongside the best guitarists I've ever listened to. But then I was on youtube and remembered why I hadn't listened to him much before. He's been making the most boring music I've ever heard with the most mundane pop musicians you can think of.

What are your examples of bands or artists who used to make great fucking music that have released total crap? It doesn't necessarily have to be somebody aging poorly, though those are welcome.
