So fairly early this morning, folks started to notice that there were more than one version of Get In the Mind Shaft.  I noticed when I saw the lyric insert at the listening party I went to that the only lyric listed for the song was one line-- "can you hear me now?"  This is why!  Apparently the album matrix numbers are different for each one.  A couple of the Facebook groups have been trying to identify them all and this is what we've found so far:

Abandoned House/Piano-  TMR-540 B-2679

"When I was young

I went into an abandoned house

In one of the rooms

I found an old piano

I didn't know how to play piano

So I just fumbled across the keys

Pressed the pedals down

I sat there for hours

Trying to understand

How to construct a melody

My brain to my fingertips

And after a while

I hit three notes together

At the same time"

Bible/Hands- TMR-540 B-1750

"Wherever you go in the world you'll find
that in the bible it says someone who works with their hands a carpenter, a pot maker, a brick layer.
Someone who works with their hands.

It's seems no matter how far the human race progresses
No matter how computerized, robotic, digital everything becomes around us.
Not too far away there is somebody working with their hands."

Fisherman- TMR-540 B-1731

"I've been walking down by the river for hours
Past sailors that have less tattoos than the average teenager
There's a man fishing and selling what he catches

A dollar a head
I've been sitting next to him for a long time now
And he's yet to look over
I have a strange feeling that I know this man
That it's me
I think it's me"

Nature/Frequency- TMR-540 B-1821

"Feeling distorted
Brick by brick by brick
A box containing another box

Upheaval in In a pond as large as the world
And a leaf that falls for infinity
it never lands
Across the country
Stones, soil, trees - all humming
the exact same frequency
The exact same frequency"

Baseball- TMR-540 B-5505
"It's 97 degrees out
The humidity is so thick
It's like drinking a glass of water
Every time I take a breath
I'm standing on this mound of dirt
Cracking the bones in my fingers one by one
I'm staring at him
Wondering what he's thinking
Is this the end or the beginning?
Will I be able to make it out alive?
And then
I slowly release the ball from my hand
And it travels toward him"

Shaft Collapse- TMR-540 B-353

(text not available yet)

There are apparently a handful more matrix numbers, but the stories haven't been identified yet. Y'all know what this means, right?  They pressed multiple masters for that whole side of the album, one for each version of this song.  Jack is crazy in the best possible way.

I spoke about this early, but i thought that was just 2 version (piano and fisherman). Jack is so craaazy. I loved the fisherman little tale, it's a little bit cliche, but it sound soooo well in jack's voice. I want to hear all of them!

For the record: Spotify version is the piano one. All of the digitals one?

And last night at the Warsaw in Brooklyn, Jack gave us another version-- He opened the song with a story about his 90 year old grandmother walking to church by herself, naming the streets she walked on, and saying she went there on Sunday, and Monday, and Tuesday, and that she would bring home rolls from the bakery that she and he would break open and sit and eat together.

I thought that was such a nice alternative opening to that song

It was beautiful to hear him remembering his busha :)  And, of course, it makes me wonder if he's going to try to come up with a different opening every time he performs that song live.

Apparently all the digital downloads seem to be the same, it seems to be only the vinyl versions that are different.  Here's another one someone found that's quite lovely--

Sunday Morning TMR-540 B-1203
“It’s Sunday Morning,
and I have that same feeling I’ve had every Sunday, for my entire life.
It’s
as if I have been woken up by whispers. The whispering of voices, all
around me, I can’t make out what they are saying. Some people would call
it ghosts or some kind of hallucination. I don’t know what I’m supposed
to call it. But I’ve never told anybody about that.”

Yep this is the intro on my vinyl copy. I'm glad you were able to find it transcribed because I was only able to pick up about half of it on my first listen. I really do like the fisherman intro though...

Any chance you'd be able to rip it to an mp3...?  :)

Heres another version that was posted on Reddit:

Distant Harm (?) TMR-540 B-1131
Theres a distant harm coming from the clouds
Just from the other side of the ridge
Nobody knows the source of the harm and
The frequency is enough to rattle anything stationary
Entire town feels like it has been cursed
The harm wont go away
People say they remember the harm from their childhood and
They say the harm has always been there and
Never gone away
(from kuskus265 on Reddit)

The poster wasnt sure about all of the words.

Just listed to the Warsaw story again.

Rolls with Grandmother - Live at Warsaw 3/23/18
When I was a little boy I grew up in a Polish neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. My grandmother was 97 years old and walked to church everyday by herself. Shed take the alley behind Ferdinand Street, cross down Porter, walk down Morrell, and on to church every Sunday, and every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Sometimes we would stop by the Mexican bakery and pick up these rolls, shed bring them home to me, and me and her, by ourselves, we would cut these rolls open and eat them together.

Folks in one of the Facebook groups are saying that one ^ is about a "hum".

I keep hoping people will start ripping all the different versions and sharing them.  Here are the four I have, for anyone who wants them:  Abandoned House, Fisherman, Baseball, and the one from the Warsaw.  The link is good through April 1st--  https://we.tl/WezSGSmJIA

Here's another version, TMR540 B- 2101, courtesy of a very nice guy over in one of the Facebook groups.  I haven't listened yet since I"m at work, but will record the audio when I get home tonight and can post a file here after that.--

I'll see what I can do for you, just gotta make sure I've got the right cable to get a rip for you first! I agree it would be cool to collect as many different intros as possible.

Put them all back-to-back, and turn it into a 15-minute song. ;)

I'm working on it :)

And I think these are the words to the one in the video above, #2101--

Sound by sound
Track by track
Note after note
Constructed melody
Soft voices provide staccato hammering
Over the top and subtle and inferior
The sublime notes
The harmonies that [can't make out the rest of the line, maybe includes the words "distant" and "yearn" ?]
Dissonant vibrations of untouched percussive instrumentation
Each one adding an extra note of frequencies
to the overall beauty of the melody around you
