In Topic: Did anyone else clock out when he went solo?

09 August 2012 - 03:43 PM

Interesting discussion here.

I just went to the Denver show last night, and the thing that struck me the most was how happy he seemed whenever he was playing White Stripes songs. Especially when the fans were singing along. I'm in roughly the same boat as ymagirl about his playing songs from his other bands without the members of those bands present, but I can't deny that his enthusiasm was infectious.

I never got to see any WS shows live, but his stage presence and style on the solo tour (at least with the Peacocks) seem like throwbacks to the old video performances I've seen of the White Stripes. I think he's said himself that he misses it, hasn't he? In interviews? It's not surprising that he's trying to hold onto it, though I do find it a little disappointing. I guess I always perceived him as this keep-going-never-look-back kind of guy. That said, I'm still basically on board with him and interested to see what he does next. My interest waned a lot in the last few months, but seeing him play live again, even in a huge impersonal venue, stirred up the fire.

Oh my god, these rule. Robby, you rule.

I just dropped into the thread because I was doodling last night and I thought the left-hand page might be relevant/interesting to the Little Room:

In the past I've found JW borderline impossible to draw and actually impossible to caricature, so I'm pretty pleased at how close those sketches got just based on web-resolution photos as sources. It's a lot easier to draw people who are physically standing in front of you, though I daresay I will probably never get that opportunity in this case.

Well, there are still new electric typewriters. Go to the far back of any office supply store and you'll find them.

If you want a manual typewriter, though, you're best off trawling flea markets. They're not too hard to find in decent working condition.

In Topic: Insane Clown Posse?

My favorite part of all this is the people recoiling in horror at the idea of owning a Vault compilation with an ICP track on it.  Even if they like every other track on the record.

To everyone who is being loudly upset that Jack White is doing things besides making the music you want him to make:  I know this is old news, but it seems relevant.

I have a feeling people will see this very differently in retrospect, when the song is safely distanced from their ears--then Jack will emerge in people's general perception as an individualist and risk-taker, even more than he already is.  I would hope, at least, that with time folks will wonder what they got so bent out of shape about.

I think this is ultimately what will happen, too.  People are pitching a fit now, but I don't think Jack has in any way damaged his credibility or public image.  If anything it's just more evidence that he has a sense of humor, is culturally conscious, and likes pulling people's legs.  Both parties in this case gained publicity and an interesting experience working with someone they wouldn't normally have collaborated with.  No one loses here.
