Easter Morning, 1969 Frank Zappa calls up Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band and tells them the album he is producing for them is done. The Captain instructs the band to dress in their Sunday best clothes before they all go to the studio and listen to the complete finished work for the first time. By all accounts, the experience tiptoed between celebratory and downright religious.

Trout Mask Replica is a touchstone in the history of recorded music. The mix of dada absurdist blues and previously unexplored experimental avenues has long been praised as one of the greatest albums of all time. As so eloquently put by John Peel, "If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work.

In full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal Bizarre label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce its 36th Vault package focused squarely on Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica.
Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.

Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest its resolution from the original release in 1969. If youve only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90s, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling.

The French-only 7-inch single of Pachuco Cadaver b/w Wild Life will also be included as part of this overreaching package. As the only single ever pulled from this admittedly dense album, this is the first time EVER that Pachuco Cadaver has been repressed and comes wonderfully housed in a replica glue-pocket picture sleeve and pressed on a white colored vinyl. ALL vinyl in this package is lovingly pressed at Third Man Pressings state-of-the-art plant in Detroit, Michigan for that extra-special attention to detail.

Additionally, Third Man Records has undertaken the creation of the first ever replica trout mask. Much in the spirit of the cardboard cutouts included in original copies of the Beatles Sgt. Peppers album, this mask will be a hit at Halloween parties and Duchampian celebrations for eons to come. If thats not enough, Third Man has commissioned an impressive, striking fabric patch that reproduces the Trout Mask cover art, an insignia that will signify any wearer as a follower in the Captains army.

And if thats not enough, the revered illustrator Jess Rotter of Rotter and Friends has run the Trout Mask cover through her inimitable style and cooked up an inspired line-drawing rendering that beautifully graces a sturdy, durable tote bag to hold all these wonderful sundries in.

Finally, as a testament to the inspiring life of Don Van Vliet, Third Man has lovingly printed Jack Whites epitaph for the man in glorious, psychedelic silkscreen broadside wonderment. Fitting in the LP jacket and fitting as a tribute, this evocative poem was originally published in March 2011 issue of MOJO Magazine.

While Trout Mask Replica kicks off the partnership with a bang, do be on the lookout for even more avant-garde and mind-bending works in the future coming from the Bizarre/Third Man unification. Minds will continue to be blown, barriers will be destroyed, verbiage will be significantly hype-worthy.

Subscriptions to the Vault are live NOW and are open through April 30th. Dont miss out.

REMINDER TODAY IS APRIL FIRST

First things first, is this a joke?

If it isn't (and i haven't read the description yet) I'll probably pass. Really can't get away with this album.

Seems very apt though considering we've all been saying BHR is very Cap Beefheart (or is that the joke??).

I think this is real. Jack popped into Vault chat to recite a Beefheart/I Fought Piranhas mashup, and the Pachuco Cadaver 7" is one that he very proudly acquired just  about two years ago--  https://www.facebook...?type=1 His love of the Captain runs deep, I'd be REALLY surprised if he turned it into a joke. But what better day to announce a Beefheart package than April Fool's Day?

I'm totally into this, too. I've already got a copy of that album, but this one is trout colored! For once, the color of the vinyl is relevant. And the tote bag and print of Jack's Mojo epitaph to Van Vliet are gorgeous extras.

Not a joke--  https://twitter.com/...846435414536192

"He is risen. Captain Beefheart's TROUT MASK REPLICA will indeed return to print for @TMRVault Package 36, fresh as the 1969 original. "

This is my first time buying the vault subscription.  When are we to expect the vinyl set to arrive?  I'm guessing the $60 is just for the vinyl?  Anything else I should know about the subscription?

Yes,  and you should expect it to arrive two to three months from now. And you should know sub renews automatically every quarter

The $60 is for a subscription to the Vault, which includes the quarterly package, Vault Novelties store, ticket pre-sales, chat room, etc. Packages are usually shipped 6-ish weeks from the payment deadline for that quarter-- For example, the payment deadline for the package we just received was January 31st, and they began shipping the third week in March.  So this one will probably be shipped mid- to late-June.

Be sure to read the Vault FAQ, it's really very helpful-- https://thirdmanstor...asked-questions

I am confused. I thought signing up for this meant I would get unreleased music, alternate versions,  video, etc of White Stripes, Jack White, or  his other projects, and  those of Third Man artists music.  This seems like such a let down, I have ZERO INTEREST in Captain Beefheart, and don't like having it shoved upon me under the pretense of being one of Jack's faves.

Were you a Vault member back when they released the Greenhornes package, or the Wanda Jackson package, or the Willie Nelson package?  They have done a LOT of packages focusing on the White Stripes, the Racs, the DW, and Jack's solo music. But they have always mixed in the occasional package focusing on other musicians that they feel are connected to Jack &/or Third Man.  You always have the option to cancel your subscription for this quarter and then sign up again when they announce a package you do like.

No, I just signed up now for BHR.... and was charged again for this quarter... so I am in for the quarter....But i will have to keenly be aware of when to cancel and realist to avoid this sort of disappointment.... conversely, the BHR package was delightful. I guess I just read the description wrong, but it does seem that Greenhorns were race related, and put out music on Third Man label....and that Willie did a concert there.... but Beefheart? I don't see the correlation.

It's not as well known as Son House's impact on him, but Don Van Vliet/Captain Beefheart had a huge influence on Jack.  Have you heard the WS covers of Party of Special Things to Do, Ashtray Heart, and China Pig? Those are all Captain Beefheart songs, and you can hear Beefheart in a lot of the weirder songs the Stripes have done, especially the b-sides.  And he's one of the first things I thought of when I heard BHR, his impact is all over that album.  Alison and Jack used to talk about him in Dead Weather interviews, and the DW made a pilgrimage to Van Vliet's childhood home after filming the Treat Me Like Your Mother video nearby. Jack's love goes so deep that he wrote an epitaph that was published in Mojo magazine when Van Vliet passed away several years ago (see the link in Datch's post above).  And more recently, TMR posted all over Facebook, etc, when Jack acquired a Beefheart single that he'd been after for a long time-- Pachuco Cadaver, the same single that is included as a 7" in the new Vault package.

The correlation here isn't as distinct as it's been with artists that Jack has actually worked with or who've performed at TMR. But this one is obviously very meaningful to Jack. Just like he bought Elvis Presley's first recording and then turned around to reissue it through TMR, he obviously wanted to do the same when he got that copy of Pachuco Cadaver. But instead of just reissuing the single, he turned it into an opportunity for his fan-base to learn more about an artist who was/is very important to him.  I would imagine he realizes that the Captain's music is not everyone's cup of tea, but this is like his celebration of the man and the artist.
