Maybe we should make a spoiler only thread.

We don't need two Star Wars threads.

But if you're that desperate to get talking about the film in spoilerific detail, just use spoiler tags for a few days.  That's a reasonable compromise, wouldn't you say?

Not a spoiler, but something to take note of when folks see the film.  For whatever reason, some of the scenes in the trailers are flipped in the film.  For example, the shot where Finn, Han, and Rey are walking toward the building with the flags, and Finn turns his head to look up at the big red robot...in the trailers, the bot is on the right; in the film, on the left.  I don't know what the purpose of that flip would be for the trailer.

OK I should probably know how to do this, but, I never have done a spoiler tag in a post. Where in the heck is the button... Or the code for this? I want to join the spoiler discussion! Thanks!

I tried to post this up above but something wonky happened.  Here's a second try.

I've seen the film, but I'm not prepared to assign it any sort of grade until I see it in its proper version, that being NOT 3D.

3D presentation is a blight on all of cinema, and if studios/theaters continue to not offer a 2D alternative for these tentpole pictures at genuinely convenient times, I may have to view these movies by other means in the future, and I won't feel the least bit guilty about it.

All I'll say about the movie is that it felt like a genuine Star Wars film, so I'm not surprised it's been well-received (commercially and critically).

So you saw the 3D version? Did it add anything at all to the film, in your opinion?

It was more noticeable than in some other films (though the phallic imagery was strong with that shot of a giant pointy battleship), but as with most 3D, it dimmed the image, created streaky halos (most noticeably) when there were bright objects set against a black (space!) background, and created undue separation between digital effects and practical photography (when the filmmakers work so hard to blend these elements!).  I hadn't planned to see the film more than once in theaters, and I tried my dardnedest to see it in 2D, but at such a late hour (10:30pm showing!), I had to settle for the 3D, because I wanted the discounted Tuesday rate.

Regardless, I would never recommend the 3D presentation of virtually any film to anyone.  And the beautiful 70mm film presentation of The Hateful Eight I watched the night earlier only underlined how underwhelming the 3D digital version of The Force Awakens really was.  I kept hoping they WOULDN'T head back out into space, because that's where the blatant shortcomings of the format become most apparent, and entirely distracting.

But, hey, if you like watching films in 3D, who am I to tell you not to?  It sure as hell ain't for me, though.

I liked Star Wars. Didn't love it, but at least it's a *real* Star Wars movie--the first since 1983.

I saw it today and would agree with pretty much all of this.

In regards to this, that very difficulty is what would make it such a good story.
