Ah.  For a second there, I thought they might be going for some pared down design.  Stupid me.

In the first picture, I thought they had a sort of printed tarp over the building, as a cover before an actual reveal.  But with that close-up from Lily, I guess that's the actual exterior of the building.  Is that the actual front door, though?

And yes indeed, very nice picture.

Yeah the "facade" is basically black painted plywood by the looks of it.

Definitely heard some loud construction noises coming from inside when I swung by.  :)

It should be interesting to see if they're continuing with the yellow/black motif with the new building; I imagine they are.

THIRD MAN CASS CORRIDOR GRAND OPENING BLACK FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27th 2015, TAMLA RECORDS REISSUES
Posted by Third Man on 18 November 2015

*poster by Rob Jones will be available on Black Friday at Third Man Records Cass Corridor

Those with an ear to the underground and a foot on the third rail of the overground, blearing Bambi-like into the oncoming head lamps of progress, will no doubt be clued to the news that nearly lucky 7 years after we champagne-launched our flagship HQ in Nashville, Tennessee, Third Man Records is expanding / repatriating itself to the blessed Rust Belt origin story environs of the Cass Corridor in Detroit, Michigan. D-Day approaches and with it a myriad of updates and exciting announcements of surprise releases, limited editions, exclusive Detroit merchandise, eye-popping in-house attractions and contraptions, and much more will be rolling out in the lead up to our Grand Opening... To wit, and without further ado...

Live and in-person Grand Opening in-store performances from Nashville's finest and Detroit's dearest:

Margo Price - The Midwest Farmer's Daughter, and latest and greatest Third Man recording artist joins us for a country soul in-store performance to get the day kicked off right.

Lillie Mae Rische - Nashville's sweetheart and Jack White's fiddler will be backed by Dominic John Davis and Fats Kaplin (also of JW backing band fame themselves) for this special performance.

The Gories - With us for our opening and their FIRST EVER IN-STORE PERFORMANCE, the Wolf Kings and Queen of the Cass Corridor. The slop that launched a thousand bands returns in all its groovy downbeat R&B glory. We couldn't be more proud to have them with us for our opening.

We will be teasing out more news of what to expect (more surprises! guest DJs!) in the coming days, but before we get bogged down in the details, we have a dream-come-true announcement to make...

*Tamla Records' Berry Gordy

In 1959 a former amateur boxer started a record label out of his home in Detroit, Michigan. Employing the colors yellow and black and open to releasing any genre that could become a hit, Tamla Records and Berry Gordy laid the foundation for what would become a global empire. Just in time for the grand opening of Third Man Records Cass Corridor, we are proud to announce an ongoing partnership with Universal Music to bring Tamla's classic early Motown records back to vinyl. On Black Friday, we return to Detroit with nine reissues from Tamla's early years.

Tamla's stripes label era (1959-62) produced million-sellers, debut releases from soon-to-be global icons, quasi-doowop anthems, and proto-surf experiments, all just looking for the next big thing. To say that they were successful would be an understatement.

TAMLA SUPREMES 1000 TAMLA MGAYE 1000 TAMLA BSTRONG 1000 click thumbnails to enlarge
These are cornerstones of American popular music and they were all housed on this label that was headquartered at an unassuming home on Detroit's West Grand Boulevard, which would soon become known to the world as Hitsville USA.

On Black Friday, exclusively at our brand new, come-full-circle Motor City store, look for the following 7"s, housed in reproduction Tamla company sleeves, and pressed on fresh black vinyl, all using the classic, inimitable stripes label designs.

Barrett Strong - "Let's Rock" b/w "Do the Very Best You Can"
Chico Leverett - "Solid Sender" b/w "I'll Never Love Again"
The Swinging Tigers - "Snake Walk (Part 1)" b/w "Snake Walk (Part 2)"
The Satintones - "Going to the Hop" b/w "Motor City"
Barrett Strong - "Money" b/w "Oh I Apologize"
Nick & the Jaguars - "Ich-i-bon #1" b/w "Cool and Crazy"
The Miracles - "Way Over There" b/w "(You Can) Depend on Me"
Marvin Gaye - "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" b/w "Never Let You Go"
The Supremes - "Buttered Popcorn" b/w "Who's Lovin You"

Stay tuned in the next week for more details about Black Friday... We've got plenty more up our sleeves...

As if The Gories playing at their grand opening wasn't enough, now there's this--  http://thirdmanrecor...pressing-plant/

As you know, Third Man Records is opening up a satellite store in Detroit's Cass Corridor, or as Pitchfork calls it "where music history was made." Well, it's about time we tell you that this is only a fraction of our plan for the building at 441 West Canfield Street, which we purchased last year with Detroit manufacturing company Shinola. Third Man is thrilled to announce that we will be opening a vinyl record pressing plant, and in it we will run BRAND NEW record presses. There's a bottlenecking in the record pressing industry right now - so much glorious demand, so few presses. We want to help ease the flow, and we want to bring more "real-life manufacturing jobs back to Detroit."

We have purchased eight presses from German startup Newbilt, and we are anxious to get them up and running, which we expect to happen mid-2016.

Here's what Pitchfork wrote about the pressing plant after speaking with Ben Blackwell about our plans.

"While the pressing plant won’t be operational when Third Man opens on Black Friday, they eventually plan to house at least eight working presses. A window in the shop will let customers see the manufacturing floor as part of Third Man’s ongoing initiative to educate the public about vinyl culture and show that, as Blackwell puts it, 'all this stuff is alive and well.'

While the manufacturing arm definitely means that Third Man will have quick access to pressings of their own output, Blackwell says the decision to open the plant is a selfless act. He argues that more overall record-pressing capacity eases the pressure on plants like United Record Pressing in Nashville, which continues to press Third Man releases, and Archer—both of which are backed up and reportedly turning away customers. Also, while no plans are currently in place, Third Man hope to press more than just their own records on-site. Potentially, the plant could offer a new option for young artists and DIY labels. 'Part of the concern in this world is that vinyl can very easily turn into an exclusionary thing,' Blackwell says. 'But this is going to make it easier for a little punk band to make 300 copies of a 7-inch'."

So, there it is, friends. We couldn't feel luckier that we get to expand our business in a field that we are so damn passionate about. Detroit, we love you, and we can't wait to be a part of your community yet again.

And here's the Pitchfork article (thanks for the link, TJ)-- http://pitchfork.com...rns-to-detroit/

Dunno about the rest of y'all, but I don't know how much more excitement I can take.

That's frickin' awesome. Both the Buick news and the pressing plant news. Hopefully I'll be able to visit there when I go back to Ohio in January.

Soon there will be 8 new machines shipped to Detroit, where Jack White,s Third Man opens up a new pressing plant The machine,s will be special painted in yellow and black.third Man records is runned by Ben Blackwell "A couple of years back we seriously strated thinking about a new factory,Not that long a go but we,ve accomplished a lot in that period .At this moment the new pressing machines are on the way to Detroit"

Last I heard through the questionably reliable grapevine, TMR's been dealing with permit issues for the pressing plant.

And I thought I'd posted this article over here, but apparently not. It's an exciting one-- How Third Man’s giant Detroit location is becoming the ultimate D.I.Y. ecosystem

Very cool that it's international news. And that they mentioned the Dirtbombs. I have to admit to maybe being a tad more into the Dirtbombs than the Gories.
