Huge, gigantic, pretty darned incredible news--  http://thirdmanrecor...-cass-corridor/

THIRD MAN RECORDS & SHINOLA PARTNER TO PURCHASE BUILDING IN DETROIT’S CASS CORRIDOR

THIRD MAN RECORDS TO OPEN NEW DETROIT BRANCH

SHINOLA TO EXPAND MANUFACTURING OPERATION

On June 1st, Shinola founder Tom Kartsotis partnered with Detroit-native Jack White to purchase the building that currently houses the Shinola Flagship store at 441 W. Canfield in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. The deal marks new expansion for both Shinola as well as Jack White’s record label Third Man Records. For Third Man, this is a homecoming of sorts, since the label was originally founded in Detroit in 2001. This expansion signals the opening of their first retail store and offices outside of Nashville, TN. The new retail space is set to be in operation by Black Friday (November 27th, 2015), with many special surprises in store.

For Shinola, the deal comes on the heels of the brand’s investment into yet another category, rapidly honing in on the ability to manufacture speakers, turntables and headphones of audiophile quality, while creating more manufacturing jobs in the US — a top priority for the innovative and quality-focused company.

Third Man Records has long aspired to have a presence in Detroit and the constantly evolving Cass Corridor in particular, given White’s history in the neighborhood. It is the location of the first-ever White Stripes show, the home of White’s high school, and an area of the city that White says, “has always been the most inspiring area of Detroit for me as an artist and as a Detroiter. From the great visual artists like Gordon Newton to the music of the Gories, and the birth of the Detroit garage rock scene, the Corridor has nurtured Detroit's soul and inventiveness for decades. That spirit pushes forward with Shinola's passion and will come full circle for the artists of the Corridor that work with Third Man Records to plant a new foundation there to help keep that creative spirit alive for decades to come."

The expansion for Third Man Records is both a return-to-its-roots as well as a reach forward into the future, and the possibilities with the additional space and the Shinola partnership are endless and exciting.

About the plans, Tom Kartsotis said, "Everyone at Shinola is so excited about Third Man Records moving into the Cass Corridor. Unbelievable… There goes the neighborhood!"

This development means a move for current retail tenant Willy’s Detroit, a sister store to Shinola, but current plans are for the storefront to remain within the building.

ABOUT SHINOLA:

In 2011, Shinola, a Bedrock Manufacturing Company, LLC brand was conceived with the belief that products should be built to last, and they should be built in America. As makers of modern, handcrafted watches, bicycles, leather goods, journals, and pet accessories, we are proud to be based in Detroit, a community-minded city with a strong manufacturing legacy. We built our watch and leather factories within the College for Creative Studies in the former Argonaut building. As a new company with a storied name, we stand for skill at scale, the preservation of craft, the beauty of industry. We are constantly working to, wherever possible, source as many domestically made components for our products. We are an American company doing everything we can to bring jobs and manufacturing back to America.

i've been saying for years they need a satellite office in detroit.

i really need to get a job there. not only for the obvious reasons, being that i greatly respect what they do. but also because every day at my current job it is a genuine struggle not to burn it down.

TJ, I don't think you could go wrong working for either Third Man or Shinola. So there's two potential opportunities for you.

with the level of attention Jack has been putting into tmr so far, opening a second store seems like a bit of stretch, hope all goes well for them :)

Is the fact that such big news only got three replies a sign that the Little Room is dying?  Or do folks really not think that TMR opening a store in Detroit is big news?

I think it's big news but I don't have anything to say about it.  It's a store.  It's not like new music.

It's more than a store. It's Jack establishing a presence again in Detroit after people thought he'd moved out for good.  It's TMR teaming up with a new partner and how's that going to work? It's the potential for Jack and TMR to contribute support to the Detroit art and music scene the way they have in Nashville-- The Detroit scene is obviously a vital one, but what sort of attention will TMR's existence there bring to it?  It's Jack involved in designing a new store again and what it might look like. It's the potential for very cool events in Detroit like the ones they do in Nashville. But whatevs.  I guess I can understand people not wanting to express curiosity or excitement or cynicism or derision or having any thoughts about it whatsoever.

And the above is not directed specifically at you, Darlene, but at the general state of things here lately.

As in, he's been putting in too much or too little attention so far?  Can't quite tell what you mean.

It is big news. Big massive news. Or it will be when it starts to come to fruition. All that has happened at the moment that we know of, really, is that some men bought a building. Come November time, folks will be buzzing about it, I'm sure.

I think social media has had an effect on the LR though. For me, most of the things that used to only get spoken about here are now discussed on Facebook. It's much more immediate, so by the time the news is posted here, the discussion's already been had and it seems pointless posting the same stuff twice.

LR's always quiet when Jack's quiet though (and i mean quiet in the sense of touring/making records, not making questionable chat comments or buying real estate :D

Im excited that they are opening a Detroit store. Hopefully I can go visit it when I go see family in Toledo.

I wonder if they're gonna mess with collectors when it comes to RSD. For example, they'll have an exclusive release at the Nashville store and then a different exclusive release at the Detroit one.

i think FB and to an extent WhiteSquirm have taken a toll on the blessed Little Room.

I'm happy about this TMR-Shinola cross-breeding. I hope it's does well for Detroit. Makes me kinda sad that TMR is expanding and I never made it to the little ol' Nashville shop that could.

TMR has kind of lost its magic for me so

but good for them I guess.  Shinola sounds cool.  But I'm really more interested in the building.

never been at tmr myself but the general idea seemed like some sort of Jack's brain child, obviiously it's not possible to keep two stores so far from each other in a same manner so propably some choices will be made, let's they'll be a good calls, tho ;)

In the first picture, I thought they had a sort of printed tarp over the building, as a cover before an actual reveal.  But with that close-up from Lily, I guess that's the actual exterior of the building.  Is that the actual front door, though?

And yes indeed, very nice picture.

No, it's the barrier they've put up during construction. Check out the link I posted above.
