^Did I ever mention that U2 spent some time in a house my great great grandfather designed?
fans who wait daily outside Bono’s south Dublin home for a glimpse of the U2
frontman, the band is recording their next album in a mansion across the road.
Strathmore, the former residence of the Canadian ambassador to Ireland, is one
of the country’s most expensive rental houses, costing €10,000 a month.
Fortunately for Bono, lead singer with a band whose net worth stands at more
than €619m, Strathmore is but a few steps across the road from his own house on
Vico Road in Killiney. He can leave his Maserati Quattroporte sedan at home and
walk to work. The Edge, U2’s guitarist, lives around the corner on Killiney
Hill Road. Strathmore was designed by Alfred Gresham Jones, the architect who
designed the National Concert Hall in Dublin. It was put up for sale by the
Canadian government in 2006 with an asking price of €17m. A campaign in Canada
protesting against the decision failed to have it reversed. Two years later,
having failed to sell the property, the Canadian government did a house swap
for No 22 Oakley Road in Ranelagh with Michael Roden, a property developer, who
paid an additional €3.01m as part of the transaction. When Bono appeared on the
season’s finale of the Late Late Show earlier this month, he said U2 was
recording its 13th album and claimed the band had done some of its best studio
work in more than three decades. Strathmore stands on nine acres overlooking
Killiney Bay, and features a rare eucalyptus plantation. Its livingroom
measures 58ft by 23ft, it features a wooden floor, coved ceiling and Portland
stone floors and doorframes. The 8,200 sq ft house was built in the 1860s for
William Henry, a retired wine merchant. The Canadian government bought it in
1956 for IR£20,300 (€25,800)."

That first single on the CBS label is so interesting. Sometime between Boy and War, Bono had to have had vocal training. His voice is so raw on those early singles. It amazes me, what I have in my record collection.
It is a resolution of mine to dive into my own record collection this year.
I am listening to hot air being forced through my duct work. The sound of sleep.
